Almost as soon as I started my engine up a couple months ago it had a slight tick that sounded like it was in the bottom end. I had 60# of oil...

Almost as soon as I started my engine up a couple months ago it had a slight tick that sounded like it was in the bottom end. I had 60# of oil pressure and it ran like a champ, so after as much external diagnosis I could do, I assumed it was a pal nut or rod just touching the oil pan since I used the old style 232 pan when I rebuilt the motor. I figured if that is what it is it will not get any worse and maybe even wear itself down enough to stop.

NOPE. I have been driving it and driving it hard for close about a month and a half now, everyday. I have ran 3 tanks of gas thru it and I have a 22 gal tank. I would say maybe close to 1000 miles since I got it together.

Friday night I was on my way home from Temecula {20+ miles away} and doing about 60+ on the freeway { it is running so well I have even started driving it on the freeway when I have to} and all of a sudden this really bad clatter starts up. I thought it sounded like sheetmetal clattering. I looked at everything I could see in the dark and could not determine what it was. I limped it home and it seemed to run fine other than the clatter.

Warren came over monday and we ran it around the block and even he could not get a fix on what it was. He thought maybe front trans bearing, but it did it even when the clutch was disengaged, so i didn't think that was it. Warren convinced me to try and pull the pan while the motor was in the truck and take a look.....here we are today.

I finally had the time to pull the pan today, what a pain, and I see a piece of what looks like sheet metal sticking out fron between the #1 rod and the front counterweight of the crank...not sheet metal. There was NO bearing left on the rod cap, it was pounded into a paper thin sheet of metal and squeezed out of the rod.

It looks like it cooked the crank as well. There is a LARGE ridge between the #1& #2 rod and it feels like it is worn too far to have turned.

Anyone happen to have a good 289 crank and 2 rods?

What could have caused this?

I was VERY meticulous at cleaning out every galley and oil port in the crank and the block {or at least I THOUGHT I did} and I was very thorough at measuring everything and once they measure in spec I even plastigauged all of the bearing to make once last check that everything was good.
It all checked out GREAT. I was very happy.

I am worried now that if I do a crank and new rods and bearings that it could happen again if there is a clog in a galley somewhere I could not find....HELP.

Thanks in advance
Kelly

The car is on the road, and it works pretty well. I have yet to get into the boost much because the computer needs to be tuned for boost but all in all the driveability is pretty remarkable out of the box. I am seeing 22 mpg on the freeway and there are no heating issues whatsoever. I plan to put another few hundred miles on it, and also have an SCTA legal cage installed (I'd love to make a few laps at Bonneville) before it goes to the dyno. We think it will make 550-600 horsepower at the rear wheels on 9 pounds of boost.

My one regret is the brakes, I did have a set of giant Wilwoods off a Winston Cup car I was going to use but everyone on here said the 11" GM disc brakes kits are more than enough. I'm here to tell you they are not. Even out of the boost this car needs way more brakes. Unfortunately for me I sold the Wilwoods.

My dad passed away a couple of years ago and I have been going through the tons of papers he had saved throughout his 94 years. And believe me, he saved EVERYTHING! Yesterday, I found a newspaper article from the Amarillo Globe-News dated March 17, 2008 by Delbert Trew. Thought it made interesting reading, and maybe some new knowledge.

"Interestingly, a direct tie between the Texas Panhandle and the Studebaker Wagon Corp. is found when Charles Goodnight, the first rancher in the Panhandle, invented and built the first “kitchen on wheels”, or chuck wagon, to be used on roundups and trail drives.
Goodnight chose a military version Studebaker ambulance wagon as a base for his chuck wagon because it had steel axles, iron springs and other metal fixtures designed for rugged use. He adder a wooden water barrel to one side and a wooden chuck box on the rear with a fold-down lid used as a table.
A “boot” was added below the food box to carry the cast-iron Dutch ovens, and a dried cowhide was slung below the wagon box to carry firewood and cow chips. The chuck wagon became the most famous conveyance in the history of the West.
Much lesser-known descriptions by witnesses and observers of the time tell how this first model of Goodnight’s was built so “hell-for-stout” and heavy, four horses could not pull it along the trails. Instead, six big oxen were required, and they so slow the rangy, long-legged Longhorn steers outpaced the wagon so far it did not catch the sleeping herd until midnight.
Later models were so successful wagon makers offered a “roundup design” with a metal, dust-proof food storage."

I wonder if Studebaker ever built a factory chuck wagon. Probably about 15 or more years ago, I saw a Studebaker chuck wagon in a 4th of July Parade here and took a picture of it. Haven't got a clue where that pic is, but I saw such a critter. Factory or not, I don't know.

Today I drove my '66 Daytona for the first time in a month or maybe a little more, and coming to a stop sign, the LR locked up and actually chirped the tire for a second. I notice when I back out of the garage, I get a clunk from that wheel. Bought the car late last summer and did have the fluid changed and system bled as the previous owner was unable to tell me when he last had that done. "Back off" that brake a little, or wheel cylinder issue? What's the most popular answer? <GGGG>

I'll have a new to me Studebaker in a few days. The car is a 65 Cruiser thats been on Craigslist and ebay a bit over the past few months. The previous owner had it for 20 years and has all records. There are a couple small issues that need to be addressed up front, valve cover gaskets (its a 283), carb overhaul and cooling hoses. I drove it yesterday and its a smooth runner, it has the flanged axles, power disc brakes, radio still works, all rockers work except for the fan switch. The paint job is decent. The one thing that is weird on the car is that the tranny was rebuilt and the rebuilder changed it from a pndlr to a prndl. The shift linkage needs to be adjusted as it pops out of park. It has the montgomery ward air conditioning system with york compressor (non-functional). The list isn't too long to take care of. I want to whip her into shape for a South Bend trip in July. The ad is still up on Craigslist here is the post with pictures
