  • Steering: 57 Provincial Wagon PS hoses-Restriction?

Please help me find hoses for a 57 Wagon with Saginaw power steering and resolve mystery
of why a restrictor is in hose at half way point. I am having one made locally but maker says
he can't put restrictor in the new hose. I plan to try and put a restrictor at the end
somehow. Also, any help on finding info for restoring the trashed PS. Thank you.

If you have the correct Pump, I can't imagine why you would need a restrictor.

Since the hoses are impossible to find with those large fittings for the Saginaw System, it may be that another make Hose with that odd restrictor was used at the time since they did not buy an expensive harder to find Custom Hose.

Wild guess if that is original hose may be that was a patch for a leak in the hose. Saganaw pumps have a flow control valve not just a pressure regulator. The restriction my be there to reduce the flow.
If the restrictor is factory my country boy way to fix would be to fill the fitting with solder or brass and drill to put the restriction in the end of the hose.Be sure to flush out hoses good.

The in-line restrictor and step-size hose was common in the '50s. The purpose was to eliminate 'hissing' and steering kickback from road shock. Later designs built these functions into the steering box and pump.

Thanks to all for great info. I found a NOS one on EBay but old
hose is probably only good for testing. I would have never guessed
the design was to quiet "hissing" and road shocks.
