  • Transmission Band Adjustment

Since I don't have tools J-5580 and J-5583 handy, I am looking for some specs for adjusting the bands in the FOM/Powershift transmission.

My memory tells me that the gauge block used in the front band adjustment is .250" thick. Is this correct?

What is the "overrun" torque of the J tools?

I had taken my trans for my 60vconv to a so called expert,So after I installed it in the car of coarse it didn't shift I bought this book and fixed it myself. It is a very sensitive adjustment . Do it in a parking lot and test before and after the shift. To much tightening makes the tranlock at the point of shifting. but isn't anything you can't learn to do. joe[img]

The adjustment procedures listed in your manual vary according to whether the transmission is a "TYPE 1" or "TYPE 2". It doesn't indicate whether a Studebaker FOM is a "1" or a "2". However, the turns to back off after torque given in the Studebaker manual do seem to match a "TYPE 1", so that looks like a good bet.

The tool maker in me says to add 1.5 times (1/the pitch of the screw) to 1/4 inch and use a spacer that thick, and adjust the screw to touch the gage and lock the locknut. Backing out 1 1/2 turns leads to errors.
