I have a complete R1 drive train, engine to rear end in my barn. I have plans for it but am wondering where it began it's life.
It has engine number R 3035.
When is the best place to cross reference this number to a vehicle?
Thanks

It's from an Avanti.

I understand it is from an Avanti. Also, the engine numbering changed in July 1963 so it was before that. Is there anyway to find out the Avanti number it is out of?

It's a good question...I really doubt that anyone has compiled a 'master list' of EVERY Studebaker Avanti's serial and original engine numbers....but I could be wrong about that!

Yes but it would involve going to the museum and looking through the Avanti production orders. It's possible, but probably not practical. The museum might also research it for you.

You might ask Dan Booth at Nostalgic. He has a large collection of documents.

John:

R1 Avanti engine R-3035 was originally installed at the factory in Avanti R-4211. That Avanti was Avanti Gray / Red Vinyl, Automatic Floor Shift, power steering, 6.70 white 500 nylon tires, electric washers, radio, and silent muffler. It was made on 4/30/63 and shipped to San Rafael, CA on May 15 of 1963.

Studebaker did not install most engines in exact production sequence, although this engine happened to be in the middle of a group of R1s that were in sequence (with some R2s scattered in between). They did install engines very roughly in sequence, but even then, engine numbers jumped around.

When I saw your request, I thought "This shouldn't take more than 5 minutes." Wrong! It wasn't where I expected to find it. The group of R1 engines from about R-3000 through About R-3050 were relatively together in production, but for example, Avanti serial R-4236 (just 25 cars later) had R1 engine number R-2862, an earlier engine. 'Hard to predict, since they grabbed engines more or less at random.

Anyway, I enjoy this kind of research--looking at POs can be pretty interesting.

Wow, that's amazing that you were able to find that. Would it be possible for you to look up two more Avanti engines, R-1214 and RJ330?

Thank you,
Nick

Thanks,George, very interesting what your research comes up with.
By the way, I see in the Production Data booklet from the museum you did the research on "notable avantis" on page 33.Did you see that R-5361 which I believe was first with the better bucket seats showed"99 tag AD building display"?

I was lucky on R-1214, Nick (I assume that's the engine number, not a serial number, right?) R1 engine R-1214 came in Avanti 63R-1365, Avanti Gold, ELV, 4-speed, tinted glass all around, power steering, AC, HD springs, Twin Traction, electric washers, radio, rear speaker, and seat belts. It was built on 9-28-62 and was shipped to Redlands, CA.

The engine number RJ-330 could have been in any of several Avantis. All R1 engines made on that date would have had the same date code. To research that, one would have to go through hundreds of Avanti POs and add up how many R1 engines were made with that code on that date. Then you would have to guess at which one you have, based in part on knowing something about the engine's history. In other words, where was the car it came out of delivered new? That would help narrow it down. A lot of work.

If you really got lucky, only one R1 engine would have been built on that day--an unlikely scenario.

R5408 still has its original engine RJ330. So there were at least 2.

I have 1964 Avanti R5407 and it also came with engine # RJ330. R5407's production order also has the notation: "TAS: CHANGE ENGINE NO. FROM R J 320 TO R J 330." So, something must have happened to its first engine, # RJ320, late in the production process.

Thank you, George, for looking it up. I'll have to double check the number on engine R-1214 since 63R-1365 is listed on the Avanti roster.

Thanks, Henry and Dwight; Studebaker's change in engine numbering/coding for 1964 made tracing a particular engine quite a bit harder.
