Hello, I know this is a strange question and I am sure there will be some funny comments, but here it goes. In California, all the gas pumps have a fume capture system. With the angle of the filler neck at the rear of my 63 Cruiser, it is nearly impossible to fill the tank without spilling over on the bumper and ground. Any tricks or adapters? Thanks, Steve.

I have found this to be difficult as well. If your Cruiser has the factory rear license plate mounting bracket, I would take it off and buy another bracket that would position the license plate an inch or so lower. I have done this and it really helps. With the plate thereby lowered, the pump's filler neck assembly can be held more vertically, which seems to help. With the license plate in the factory position, I was always fighting the top of the plate with the pump handle.
Also, when you know you are almost to where the pump is going to click off, slow down on the handle trigger.

I just Park it nose down whenever possible, put the front wheels off of the Concrete slab that is always near the Pumps, and onto the lower Blacktop, after the tank is half full, run the Pump on the slowest speed, well into the filler as far as you can and after the first shutoff do not put much or any more in.
Works for me on the '62-'66 Sedans with those Low Fillers and short Pipes.
But I realize it is much easier here where we don't have that strong spring and vapor seal to force into the filler like I have to use when in Calif.
Be sure you have a non-Vented Cap.StudeRich

I bring a 1' rubber hose that slips over the nozzle then pull back the bellows & fill. These darn Jerry Brown-California Air Resources Board things I think are figments of some backroom nimrod that drives an electric car & has no idea how these things perform. Plus that electric car pays no road tax that all the rest of us with our left over dinosaur remains use & pay. Same mentality goes for these gas cans that now are missing the vent. I'd like to see one of these nimrods show how they can be used without spilling so much gas that whatever vapors may have gone into the atmosphere before are more than compensated by the spillage these new cans produce!

We don't have the California nozzles but the standard auto-shutoff is usually a splash late on my 41. I just use my ears. I can hear when the level hits the fill pipe and I stop it manually. Since I buy gas about times a year whether I need it or not being careful is not much of a hassle.

my 60 isn't quite that bad, but I have the same system on my 65 Skylark. I rotate the nozzle 45 degrees from true vertical (using the nozzle itself as an axis of rotation) and it seems to work fine like that.RadioRoy, specializing in AM/FM conversions with auxiliary inputs for iPod/satellite/CD player. I not only have the same problem of over filling but being as I am 6'6" tall, bending over to fill the tank is a real pain. I put new rear springs on, hoping that would bring the back end up, but to no avail.
