  • Fuel System: Air cleaner for a 4bbl carburetor - 1961 Lark

I'm considering replacing my Lark's current 2 bbl setup with an Edelbrock 1403 and am looking for an air cleaner to top it with. Would a stock air cleaner fit this carburetor? Is it possible to modify a stock cleaner if it doesn't fit since I think there is a 1" difference between the the top openings of the Carter AFBs and the modern Edelbrocks? If not, are there any currently manufactured air-cleaners that fit modern Edelbrock carbs that look similar to what Studebaker offered during the period?

    Thanks!
    Albert

Studebaker International sells a base that fits the Edelbrock and the chrome R1 air cleaner.
They also sell repop R1 air cleaners for the Edelbrocks
If they are out I have a new base for $25.00 plus shipping.

New Edelbrock AFB Clones have 5 1/8" openings, and Stude. 4 Brl. Air Cleaners and Carbs are 4 1/8".

Some of the parts stores carry a variety of adapters. Many cars today are mixing and maxing AFBs

Find the air cleaner base that fits your carb. Cut the bottom out of the air cleaner you wish to use. Weld the 2 together. Wala, original looking air cleaner that fits.

If you want correct looking , look for a WCFB and its air cleaner.

Exactly, that's the only way you'll get one that fits and looks stock. It works, I modded a '53 coupe air cleaner this way to fit a 5 1/8" Holley carb. If you can't weld, JB Weld, pop rivets or even sheet metal screws will work.

Thank you Robert - I'll keep you in mind when I get to putting in the 4bbl - will probably be a project for next summer.
