  • R2 Avanti price in 1971

Does anyone know what either '63 or '64 R2 Avantis were selling for in the summer of 1971

  • #2
I know of one back in 71. It was an R-2, maroon with black interior. Very low miles and 4 speed. Rear ratio was 3.07. Manual windows and no power steering. It listed for $1800. I had no money as usual. Had special traction bars on the frame to U clamps. A collector bought it and it was in storage last time I saw it around 76-77 time period. Also has special mags with spinners.

A few other "under 30,000 miles" very clean R2's listed with no prices........

And a Gold '63 R3 "Bonneville Record Holder" (#9 car) with under 2,000 miles for $6500........

In 1971, I got out of the Army with combat pay in my pocket and was looking for a sporty car. There was a turquoise R2 needing an exhaust system and a maybe just a tune-up but it had the appearance of being run hard and not maintained, so maybe a complete engine rebuild, for $1800. Instead, I bought a 1965 Sunbeam Tiger. They were just interesting used cars.

There is an entry in the log the previous owner kept on my 63 R1 (R4541) stating he paid $2,000 for the car in August 1971. Equipped with AT, AC, PW.

My memory says that reasonably nice, complete, stock, not show, Avantis were $2000-$2500 then. At seven to eight years of age they were approaching the bottom of their depreciation curve at that time.

Here's some ads from Bob's archives that were advertised in 1971: http://www.studebaker-info.org/AVDB1...154x0471ad.jpg

Remember most of these were in Turning Wheels, as such they were probably optimistic verses actual local used car values at the time.

Seems like low prices today, but $2,000 in 1972 is worth $11,509 in 2016 dollars!! That $3,500 Avanti R3 in July 1973 was selling for $20,035 in today's dollars. Everything is relative.

But I wish I could fire up a Delorian and go back to 1973 or even 1963 and bring back a few of those cars!

That sounds about right to Me, R1 / R2 Cars. My Father bought a 63 R1 4 speed in the Fall of 72 for $2,600.00,nice over all condition - turn key and GO.

I bought my old '63 Avanti R-1 for $2,500 back in 1970 and it too was in great condition. A great car to drive!

I purchased 63R-3623 (R2, automatic, p/s, p/w, tinted glass all around) for $1500 in 1976......needed some refreshing, but not a bad car overall!
