I am thinking about storing ethanol free gas and have a question. Can I store it in airtight steel drums or does it need to breath. I plan to use 50 gallon drums stored in a barn to keep them out of the sun. Also will it absorb water the way ethanol does?

I do see warnings on the internet of gas going back up to $3 a gallon, but I wouldn't want to store too much for long periods. I try to keep about 15 gallons of good gas, without corn crap, in red plastic gas containers, and it does fine, but it never gets more than 12 months old. Your insurance man wouldn't like to hear of your plan, and if you had a fire, you'd better warn the fire department of the danger you could put them in.
I'd ask a local farmer how they store gas and how much evaporates. I know today's gas has higher pressure from the gas trying to evaporate. My red plastic containers bulge out when the temps warm during the day, and they suck in during the cooler nights.

I want to use steel drums sitting on a rack much as a farmer would. Also it is about a two hour drive to the nearest source and I will be using it in two 50 cars, one is a semi daily driver. With around 15 gallons per fill up each and two drums I don't think I will have to store it more then three or four months. I would much rather just fill each car at a station when needed but there is just not a source near me. Also thought about keeping about eight red containers in the garage but don't like the idea of keeping that much gas in the garage. Mabey use a small metal building in the back pasture, nothing taround it for 40 yardssigpic

If you do use a drum for storage...
Take your mig welder gas and put some argon gas in the top of the drum after filling.
The gas will displace any air, and the moisture that is in the air.HTIH (Hope The Info Helps)

A good gas storage unit is an old freezer or fridge. You can also build a wood container with 1" thick sides, top and bottom, with 1" thick shelving. The hinges would need to be bolted through with nuts and with a substantial lock and labeled FLAMMABLE. The NFPA standards have several storage methods and this is the bible the marshals use.
