It would be quite a project as these early unibody cars attract rust like crazy.

In the 1970's I bought a Metropolitan for $30...with an extra engine. It wasn't running and I intended to fix it up but life got in the way and I sold it a few years later. They're neat little cars.

A couple tweeks here and there and you can have this.

Wes Goddard's 1958 Nash Metropolitan is one of the most unique Top Sportsman cars out there. Packing a pair of turbos, this small, short-wheelbase car make for an insane ride as it franks off 6-second, 200 MPH laps.

Just a few bucks separating these honeys from the big time.

In 1964, Cathy needed a car for local use. She liked the look and size of the Metropolitan. We looked at and drove a couple. Then I bought her a low mileage, 1961 Lark VIII Regal sedan - a great car.

Dwain G, we had a little 62 model for a few years. It was in primer when we bought it in a light rain, ( always the worst possible thing to do ), but that little rascal was solid and ran great ! It had the 1500 engine that was ...well...adequate, but never any trouble. A Metropolitan specialist north of Nashville, TN sold us a few trim parts, and showed us that the modern Datsun engines were an exact replica ! He said he usually used the Datsun parts or engines to fix his customer cars with. We painted it red and white, and really enjoyed the little thing for quite a while. As usual, can't post pics on this part of our forum, sorry.

the Craigslist ad has been deleted, so i reckon they were sold.

in the early 70's, a good friend of mine had a '59 Metropolitan and i had a '62 Hillman Minx convertible. the Metro was in great shape, the Minx - not so much. you should have seen the looks (and laughs) of our fellow high schoolers while cruising on Friday and Saturday nights in Pomona, Ca.

Nice looking car! Are you able to add to the discussion in the original link about the 4 speed blocked off to be a 3 speed? True? Not true?

Early Triumphs were like that...they used a truck or tractor transmission and first was just too low to be of use so they blocked it off... Could be the same.

I do not know about the blocked off 4th. All Metropolitans 54-61 came with a three speed. Here are pics of the transmission.

When I was a kid my mom had one. She was at the gas station and the guy filling the tank opened the hood to check the battery (I know I'm dating myself) and it wasn't there. He asked mom where it was and she said if it's not there I don't have one!! That little car was great - had the same engine as the old MGs if I remember correctly.

The engine is closely related to the engines in a sprite, MG midget, morris minor and several other cars that you might well recognize too. A tough little motor for its day.
