I found a big truck trans in the junkyard and they're having a half price sale Monday and Tuesday. It says T98 on the side but the shifter is missing. I got the V-8 bellhousing off it today ($18.95) and thought I'd go back for the trans if it's better than a 49 from behind a 245. Are they interchangeable? Is the T98 all synchro and the old 49 non-synchro?

I'm not a expert, but the T 98 is a non synchro too, so I don't see the advantage unless the big six tranny won't work on the V8.

T-98A in my Champ seems to have no problems shifting.
IE there are synchros for 2nd 3rd 4th.
Only the older trannies like the T-9's lacked such refinements.
With a 2.73 rear gear, granny gear will come in handy.
The T-98A was optional on E5 thru E40 models.

Greetings, buddymander,
For trucks, the T98 is a huge improvement over the T9. Grab it if the price is right! It shifts infinitely better than a T9, both up and down, as it has synchro on the top three gears. The low gear is very low ratio, on the order of 5-or-6-to-1, but that is what you will need if you go with the 2.73 rear gear.

I'm going back over to the junkyard tomorrow cuz it's half price day again. I'll get that T98 if it looks good inside and I don't get a hernia...I'm going to look around there for the shifter and top cover too cuz they're off. I like the way that big shifter looks sticking up out of the floor like an old truck should, plus the side mounted e-brake is neat too.
