  • Promoting Your Chapter & the Studebaker Car

Last fall, I was approached by Katherine Roy of the Workers Arts and Heritage Centre, as she was looking for something that our local Studebaker club could donate for their Silent Auction for a Gala dinner being held at Liuna Station in Hamilton On. After much thought, we came up with a ride in a vintage Studebaker. So, we composed the poster for the Silent Auction, included a ticket for the winner, there were some restaurant coupons and I believe a tote bag which the Hamilton Public Library had provided with a Studebaker Bullet Nose car printed on it. The ride was to be in our '64 Avanti. I finally met up with the winner on Aug. 21 at the National Historic site here in Hamilton called Dundurn Castle. After going over the history of the vehicle, how it came to be developed, how many were made, and some unique features of it, we embarked upon our three hour tour of the area of Hamilton where Studebaker Canada once had its home. We provided the winner with pictures of various sites including the Studebaker plant also. All in all our chapter received a lot of very positive press from this venture and I thoroughly enjoyed showing the winner my home town city of Hamilton. I was born and raised not far from the Studebaker plant. Needless to say, our family has a soft spot for all things Studebaker as my wife Susan's, ( What's Happening Turning Wheels) father worked there from the time it opened.

Now you can read below the write up from Mr. Bob Ross.

Last year's Sam Lawrence Dinner had a lot of highlights, but one stand-out moment was Mr. Bob Ross winning the Silent Auction package that included a tour of Hamilton's East End in a 1964 Studebaker Avanti. This past weekend, Mr. Ross and Mr. Roland Lusted president of The Hamilton Chapter Studebaker Drivers Club met up for a sunny drive in a classic car with a lot of history:
"The weather cooperated and I had a wonderful tour around Hamilton in a terrific car!!! So much of the city retains its historic buildings and homes! Mr. Lusted has an amazing store of information regarding the industrial history of Hamilton. We toured a number of sites (regrettably many now long gone and the jobs with them) including the former Studebaker Plant...many thanks to you and Mr. Lusted for making it possible."

The Video below gives an excellent overview of the development of the Avanti.

What a wonderful experience for the winner, and an excellent way to get the SDC name in the media. Thanks, Roly, for making you and your Avanti available for such a good cause. This is an inspiration to the rest of us.

Activities like that are great exposure. Our small town, Shepherdstown, WV, is a very artsy town. Last year they put out a plea for antique cars to transport members of a (weird) society from downtown to a mansion a few miles out of town where they were holding their gala. I volunteered with my '64 Avanti and I transported three 30ish women. They were blown away by the car and when time came to transport them back to town, the three women looked for my car and dashed to it so no one else could beat them to it. At the end of the return we dropped off our passengers at the end of the main street where they had a band, an announcer, lots of lights and TV coverage. They asked me again this year, but we were out of town. Maybe next year.

Thanks so much for the reply. You are correct, in that is this type of exposure that promotes our vehicles. We were lucky with the tour as Studebaker was in our town. Roly
