  • Transmission / Overdrive: 1951 Champion automatic transmission

What is the proper procedure to check the automatic transmission fluid in a 51 Champion? For many other makes of cars in the 50's you would check the fluid level while the car is running and in Park, but I believe that is not the case with this car. Also what is the recommended fluid. I believe at one time is was Dextron III. Thanks for your help.

The most preferred Fluid is Type "F" or "FA" (Ford).

Dexron would also work but with more slippage on shifts.

Note that transmission specific fluids did not exist in 1951. When yours was built, 10 weight oil was specified. Modern fluids are quite superior. I've been using Dexron in mine for forty years.

Per the Automatic Drive Owner's Guide that came with your car, here's your procedure:

Rather than just setting the parking brake, which works perfectly well, I also ease the nose in to a solid surface, just for ridiculous security.
