  • 1947 Studebaker - $600,000

Did you ever think you would ever see a Studebaker expected to fetch $600,000? Well Mecum Auctions is offering the Vince Gardner 1947 Studebaker Special at the Monterey auction.

Check out today's Hemmings Daily for the story behind this wonderful car. Which SDC member is going to start the bidding?

I think I'll stick with the '48 I have now. However, for this custom, I searched the internet for pics. Great looking award winning car. I found the following under hood picture. Can someone tell me what that vertical mounted starter motor is doing? Is that some kind of hydraulic pump mounted on it? What is it powering?

I supplied many parts to Roxas for this restoration.
I am not too far from his shop.
The vertical motor is the hydraulic pump that opens the hood and some other functions that I do not recall.
The car was converted to 12 Volt.

The hood and trunk are both hydraulically operated.

I found the car stored at the Packard Museum in downtownDayton, Ohio during a visit in May last year.

I do not like it being referred to as a "prototype". IIRC, It was Vince's personal custom, not a Studebaker prototype.

My top bid would be $3000.

I like it although I would need to win the lottery to be able to afford it. It for some reason reminds me vaguely of the car in the original "Topper" movie. It has that same over the top vibe to me only in a 50's theme. The Topper car used a 1936 Buick Roadmaster as the starting point. Oh well I always do have these weird associations.

12V is definitely the 'way to go' when you add electrical accessories to 6V vehicles!
