  • Fuel pump identification

At the last Studebakers of Arkansas meeting one of the members had the hood up on his 62 GT Hawk and someone commented on the strange fitting sticking out of the top of his fuel pump. The owner thought it was a vacuum port, but I didn't think so. The fitting in question was a brass hose fitting and pointed up and toward the drivers side at an angle. I seem to recall reading about something like this being used to aid fuel flow on a Golden Hawk when it was under boost. Am I close or completely off base? [?] I know it's not stock on a 62 GT.

It sounds like a line connect to change the air pressure to the carb on a supercharged golden Hawk. .

Without being able to see it ,it could be an R-2 pump which would have a line from the supercharger hooked up to that fitting to increase fuel pressure as boost increases.

Well it is either a small bowl '57-'58 GH or an R2 Avanti large bowl (diaphragm size). The important thing is to use caution here, on a stock 289 Hawk, yes it needs to be plugged to keep trash out, BUT these pumps have had the vent plugged!

In the very top there may be a plugged very small hole or on R2 it's concealed inside of a cross drilled hole. If you plug the fitting you must OPEN the vent. Or you could do like Tom sbca in Santa Barbara, CA did, he plugged the fitting and drilled a small hole in the plug.

He should just sell it to someone who needs a Supercharger fuel pump, and get the right one.

Thanks for the info. I'll let him know. The car is a 4-speed and he just converted it to Turner disk brakes and is eager to drive it like it should be.
