Has anyone used a particular spray can red paint that was close to the Cherokee Red? I plan to do some large truck rims and spray can quality will suffice for my needs. My sense is the color is what I'd refer to as fire engine red but I've only seen it on paint chips on the internet.

The 1954 to 1960? Willys Jeep "President Red" is very close, just have an Auto Paint Store counterperson show you the Color charts to see a real world view of them, or TRY to visualize the colors on the on-line copies of the various Paint Co's. Color Charts there are many big Three Auto Colors that are very close.StudeRich

Are we talking about "Show" quality match, or presentable cruise-in, driver, utility quality? If you are looking for a good "close is enough" rattle can paint, I would look at the major brands like Rust-Oleum, or Krylon. Many of their standard colors have been offered for decades, and can be bought right off the shelf nationwide. The problem with these paints, is durability. Especially red pigments. Red paints can fade into a wide spectrum of colors, from a brilliant red to orange and even pink. Choosing a brand that is reliably available when respray or touch up is required makes it convenient.
I painted my horse trailer with Rust-Oleum's Appliance White. Any time I need to renew the paint, I can buy in rattle cans for touch up, or quart cans for respraying. When I was in the freight business, I used the same Appliance White on the wheels.John Clary

Thanks Lynn. My wheels are definitely not that red still. I know I can go to an auto paint store, but I'm leaning toward John's rationale in something convenient and since I'm not restoring the truck, simply getting it functional and running, I thought painted red wheels would be enough to make it look like it's more than just a rolling piece of patina...which is what it's going to be!

Unfortunately, I have no way to take a sample down to the paint store for them to match.
Does ANYONE have old paint codes for say, Sherwin Williams, Dupont or Ditzler (now PPG)? I will be going through the same thing when it is time for new tires. I love the look of the old split rims. They are a bitch to work on though. I installed 6 modern (albeit used) Michelin radial tires from a wrecked Chevy one ton about 4 years ago. One of the old tires had to be 50= years old. I had to cut it off with a sabre saw, then chisel the seating bead off a 1/4 inch at a time. Anyway, these tires are starting to show some cracks, so I may spring for brand new ones. I figured when the day comes, I will disassemble all the rims and have the red part powder coated.

Go to Paintref.com/Studebaker, enter you car's year and find the Cherokee Red color chip. There will be five major paint suppliers listed to the right of the chip with their modern paint cross reference codes. (Note: not all will supply your needs) Scrolling down further you'll find dashboard paint colors. Get your local automotive paint store to make a rattle can for your code.

Cherokee red is a truck only color, so it may or may not be on the car color charts.RadioRoy, specializing in AM/FM conversions with auxiliary inputs for iPod/satellite/CD player. In the old car radio business since 1985.

I have never had a split rim come apart on me. But, don't want to make my angel of a wife a widow either. I double wrap with huge ratchet straps, the ones that are as big as a tow strap.
Yes, I mounted all 7 of them myself. I am a glutton for punishment.Last edited by Lynn; 08-02-2016, 06:54 AM.

Leo, I believe you can take that ditzler paint code to almost any paint store, and they can set you up with a rattle can full.
