  • Electrical: amp light

I have been helping my friend get a 1961 2 dr lark 6 back on the road after a 7 year sleep. All systems worked fine except the brakes. We just finished a complete brake rebuild today and took it for a spin. When we got back the amp light came on when we shut the ignition switch off and would only go off when we disconnected the battery. The amp light is off when the car runs or when we put the switch in the accessory position. It is on all the time with the switch in the off position. it was not like this until we drove the car today. Is this a bad switch or a short somewhere? Any one else have a similar situation? Where do we start to look. The generator appears to be charging when the car is on and everything works fine other wise.

If it still has the original generator you might need to polarize the voltage regulator.

Put an ammeter between the battery post and the cable to see how many amps is being drawn when the engine is off. You might have a sticking contact in the voltage regulator.
But start with polarizing the generator, because it may have lost it's residual magnetism after such a long sleep.
