  • Electrical: prestolite 4108

hi, currently rebuilding my prestolite distributor as backup, in case my replacement electronic Mallory module decides to fry again. Anyway, I had a squiz at the manual, and while there is mention of the "oil wick", there is no explanation as to how it functions. I was wondering what lube (if any) is used on the prestolite points cam, to prevent excessive wear on the little plastic points bumper? Just a dob of standard grease?? Or a thinner oil? or do I squirt oil into the wick? Thanks, Quentin

I use a thin coat of distributor cam lube on the cam. If the points have a felt wick, then I give that a couple drops of motor oil. A small tube of distributor cam lube can be bought at the auto parts stores or on ebay, where someone might want to retire on the sale. LOL
A tube will last your lifetime, and probably the next owner's lifetime.

"A tube will last your lifetime, and probably the next owner's lifetime."

      Too true!
I garage sale'd a large (think autobody spot filler) tube of Delco-Remy still in its hard cardboard&tin, pull the string box.
The tube had been opened but hardly used, and I have enough for several lifetimes.

The wick is located underneath the rotor. Don't try to fill the cavity, just two or three drops of light motor oil. The oil creeps down and keeps the cam from seizing on the shaft.
