I was wondering if that weird bell-crank setup was a first step to the second step of power-steering that never came? Perhaps a hand-me-down unit off the Larks.

Even though that linkage was used on 8E only, there was an early and late generation of it.
When an 8E was fairly new, they steered quite nicely. But, the steering box was not rugged enough for truck use and got worn out easily. When rebuilt, they would again drive nice - for a while, anyway.

I've heard that the steering system used on the 8E Champs can be converted to power steering. If my memory is correct, they used a modified Hawk setup. That same memory says to call Dave Thibeault at 978-897-315859 Lark wagon, now V-8, H.D. auto!
