My 61 Hawk came from the factory with a 4 speed. A previous owner changed it to a T86 with OD. I kept this transmission for drivability when the car was completed. I bought a rebuilt T86/OD from Jerry Kurtz a few years ago and gave him mine as a core. When I moved the car a few days ago I noticed the speedometer wasn't working. Tonight I pulled the speedometer cable out of the trans and discovered the pinion gear on the end of the cable didn't have any teeth left. When I spun the gear with a drill the speedometer worked.
So before I buy another pinion gear for the speed-O cable, I want to be sure the what I get will work and not chew the teeth off of the gear again. Is there any way to determine which drive gear is inside the trans? The tail shaft housing has R10F-1C or possibly -1G cast into the case which I doubt is much help for identification purposes.Based on the parts catalog a T86/OD for a 61 Hawk should have a 1546046 drive gear but I can't confirm that.
I pulled the OD governor hoping it would help. I can't find any stude P/N's on it. It is an Autolite and has P/N: TGE-4018A stamped in it. The gear on it is P/N: W448-531. Is there any way to tell which transmission drive gear will work with that OD governor gear? The teeth on the OD governor were fine.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
