Does anyone have an idea on how 64 Hawks were made with the half vinyl Sports Top ?

52291We imported 5 five RHC '64 GT Hawks during 1964 in the one shipment with one having the factory sports roof suggesting 20% but that is speculative of course.

Well, Joe, of the 64 Avanti powered Hawks, there were 62 Black and 26 White Sport Roofs. And I believe Studebaker International still has some of the originals. Dan

It's the rear edge moulding that's the tricky part!

I believe I've figured how to add an image now so these are the two key fobs that I have had for awhile - enjoy.52295

Nice items, but I am a bit surprised to see them attached to this thread.

Don't know how many there were, but I owned one some years ago. Snatched this one on eBay- three day auction, no pictures, brief description stating manual transmission. Guessing that it might be a four-speed I contacted the seller and found that it was a four-speed. Was his dad's pride and joy (original owner). Hadn't been driven for nine or ten years. I went up east of Lancaster, PA and picked it up. Seller included a stack of service invoices about three inches thick. Seems that dad was almost extreme in maintaining the car. Floor had been professionally repaired and one front fender and one rear quarter had been replaced and the other fender and quarter came with the car. The red interior was in excellent condition. It was also a disc brake car. It had 140,000 miles on it with no record of being rebuilt so I decided just to try starting it without really doing anything to it. Fired right up and ran smoothly, good oil pressure, stayed cool. I registered it and got it out on the road. Ran very strong, smooth, no sign of any problems- standard 289 with two barrel carb. Only disappointment was no tach, no clock, no radio, no power steering.
I had bought it just to put on eBay. My prep for listing was just to clean the car a bit. Got 3x what I paid for it. Kind of wish I had kept it.

My first attempt at adding an image & messed up where I posted the result. I'm sure you will forgive me.

Unless this has been done already, I suspect one would have to sort through all 1767 production orders for 1964 G.T. Hawks to determine exactly how many were assembled with the optional vinyl SportsRoof.

That's right, Craig. Since the 1964 Hawk production orders are mixed in with the Lark-type POs, one would have to go through all 19,202 South Bend 1964 production orders to answer the question. (My research shows only those 1963 and 1964 GT Hawks that were built with Avanti engines.)

A research project on all the 1964 GT Hawks produced would be interesting; anyone up for going through the 19,202 POs again?! I think I'll rest my eyes for awhile. <G>

I have a 64 GT parts car with a rusted top, thought it would make a great convertible.

Interesting project Bob. You should send the 64 Hawk registry the serial number so everyone knows it hasn't been crushed

Since no one seems to have an exact answer, my guesstimate is between 300 and 400. The percentage is probably higher for heavily optioned Hawks, such as R series engines, and the ratio would vary across the country depending on weather and desirability/trend (1964 was near the beginning of vinyl top popuarity/common availability).

Hey Clonelark, do you have the roof moulding that divides the paint line to the vinyl top?
If so I would like to buy it from you.
Regards,
Brian

Clonelark. I'd be interested in the horn button if it's in good shape
