  • Production Order affidavit, RE: numeral '1' in March TW

We now have a letter from the SNM attesting to the fact that 'I' represents the number '1' on Studebaker car serial plates.
I need to email Andy and call his attention to the truck serial plates that began using a straight numeral 'l' somewhere around 1956. I haven't nailed the year down yet.

That must be proof 'secret' serial numbers were used at least as far back as 1931!!

Look at an old typewriter, there is no 1. Lower case "el" used to look just like 1. Saved money and space.

Most people, even older than me, used the I (upper case i), not the l (lower case l) for a one (1) when typing on typewriters that did not have a 1 as part of their QWERTY keyboard.

It takes a LOT more than a typewriter to stamp a serial number plate!

I believe that font is exclusive to Studebaker with specially made number stamps just for them (hence the blueprint) for regular production vehicles, and making the 1 appear as an uppercase I was intentional; not 'because that was all that was available'.

Maybe that "1" can look like "7" ? My early science training specifically made differentiating "2" vs. "Z" vs. "7" vs. "1"........
