  • Avanti front exhaust pipe

I hope someone can shed some light on a question I have. Since an Avanti uses a convertible Lark style frame, why would the front exhaust pipes (pipe off the manifold) used on an Avanti be the same as those for a Hawk? Is there any difference between front pipes on a Lark and those for a Hawk?

    regards,
    Jay

Because any differences in the frame are from the firewall back. they use exactly the same stampings, except for the enter length. So, the pipes in the middle are what is different. There are not any cross members or other obstructions in th front part of the frame where the engine sits.

I guess I'm out to Lunch, isn't the Hawk Frame COMPLETELY different ? yet Avanti and Hawk use the same front Pipe. Lark/Lark Type does not use the same Front pipe, yet Avantis sit on a Lark Frame .

No, ANY frame from 51, on is virtually the same from the firewall forward, the differences in length are made up in the middle of the car. One can splice the front or rear sections from any car to repair damage or rust. Bolt on cross members, and motor mounts are different, but the frame is the same stamping.
One could shorten a Hawk, frame, ad the appropriate cross members, weld on the correct body mounts, and "X" brace, and make an Avanti frame.

So the wheel base on an Avanti is not the same as a 63,64 Daytona rag top ?

Also, recall that the automatic transmission mount set (Insulators in Studebaker language) are the same set for Avanti/Hawk and different for Lark. The Avanti/Hawk mounts have the two hole pattern at the highest position, thus raising the torque converter an inch. So possibly the front exhaust pipe shape is slightly different to clear the crossmember.

This is ODD, since people are using the Avanti II Dual Head Pipes on '65 & '66 Lark Types.

You might want to make that '53 to '66.

The Frame Rail width on a '51-'52 is about 1 1/4 Inches the '53 is more like 2 1/2 Inches. Guessing without measuring.

UPDATE: added the forgotten II to "Avanti", thanks Joe.

Odd might be right, maybe because the Chevy engine sits different and allows that pipe to aim properly at the back end of it ? but how does this work any ways, I thought the bolt pattern is different on Chevy Exhaust Manifolds than Studebaker ?

That makes sense. If the rear of the engine is raised an inch there would probably be interference with the front pipe at the crossmember.
