I have a '48 Land Cruiser and have starter problems.
Rebuilt the 6v pos. grd starter and replaced the ring gear.
Starter still hangs up in ring gear. I think I need to replace
the two bolts with factory tapered bolts. I think the number is p/n 529367.
I need help finding these bolts.
    Help?

Try calling Studebaker International and giving them the Part Number, no sense having them check their Catalog, it is not listed.

They will need to transfer the message to the South Bend Store and check inventory there for these Special Shouldered Bolts, they are not Tapered. Ask for Jim.

      Welcome to the Forum George.
To be sure of this, you might try to use some tape on the existing bolts to achieve a tighter fit to the engine block and the starter. This won't hold for long but will help to ascertain the diagnostic.
      Best of luck.

Assuming the ring gear is correct, another reason for your situation could be poor dial indicating a changed bell housing...

Thanks StudeRich. I will try locating the special shouldered bolts also.

I hope that's not it, but I will keep the bell housing in mind. Thanks.

You can use grade 8 bolts with a shoulder. Buy the longer bolts that have the lengthened shoulder on them, then cut the threaded end to fit. Fine threads with grade 8 nuts and lock washers will do the trick.

The special shoulder bolts aren't used in the six cylinder cars. They use a 7/16" 14tpi X1 1/2" bolts.

On older Sudebakers the starter is located by a rib on the mounting flange.
No special shoulder bolts like the V8 starters.
Sounds like a bell housing misalignment to me.
