View Full Version : Pistons and rods?

Can anyone provide me with the proper orientation of the rods and pistons in a V8 Studebaker engine? In particular the rod oil holes the nuts on the pinch bolts and the numbers on the rods and there proper direction on each bank. I wrote down this information from Bob Johnstone's site but when I compared it to a 1953 Motors manual I have some of the specs were different or missing. I do not have access to my Studebaker shop manual at this time. Thanks for any help.

I have a disassembled 289 out in the shop. Will go out and check it.

Please, please get a shop manual, there are two many thing you can do wrong just winging it. I've built a few dozen, and I still refer to the manual.

Darryl, drop in at the racing forums and somebody there can answer any questions like that right off the top of their head. I'd have to do a comparison in the books myself.....

Sonny, I could answer his questions too, but your missing the point. Building a engine without the book handy is just asking for trouble. The questions he does not know to ask are the ones I worry about.

In this case, I agree with JDP...

There will be many more questions that he will need answered. And rather than ask one today and another day after tomorrow and another a day after that...just get a good manual....all the questions will be answered by the flip of a page!

If he want's hot rod advice..by all means...go to Sonnys "Racing Forums"...you'll get more ideas than most can handle!

Sorry for asking too many questions. I do have a shop manual but its several miles away where my car is having body work done. The reason I ask is I have the piston and rod assemblies here at home and when I go to pick up my cyl. heads if the piston and rods are not correct I'll have the guy redo them. I do appreciate the answers and help that y'all have given.

Hmm, I don't think my reply made it through so I'll try it again. Odd numbered rods go in the left back with the numbers pointing left (to the outside) and on the front of the journal while even numbers go in the right bank with the numbers pointing right (to the outside) on the back of the journal. If you have some un-numbered replacement rods, hold it upright with the oil hole facing you. If the wide part of the offset is on the left, it's a right bank piston and if the wide part of the offset is on the right, it's a left bank piston.

Oh, just in case you forgot, remember the left bank is with the engine right side up and you're facing the same way the car goes down the road (unless you do a lot of backing up) and number one is left front and number eight is right rear. It's real easy to get right and left mixed up when you're hanging over the grill with the radiator cap reaming your belly button three sizes bigger.
