  • Steering: Steering box

I have a 1956 Commander. The steering box is leaking. The only seal is on the side where the pitman arm attaches.I called Studebaker International to check on the seal.It is only $9.00.The mechanic told me that this seal is very hard to replace. He said that he usually pulls the 75-140 grease out and replaces it with axle grease or Marine graphite grease.Anyone had this experience or have suggestions?

I would not put axle grease in a steering box, ever. Axle grease does not flow and once wiped off your worm/sector you have no lubrication. If you're concerned about leakage, try some John Deere corn head grease - it flows and is used in early steering boxes successfully. I've used straight 140 with some STP. Early Ford used something called 600wt oil, which was about like 140, and is avail from aftermarket suppliers (check Model A places). But i wouldn't use axle grease...

I have heard of folks putting synthetic red grease and 140 together 50/50 and blending it before pouring it in too.

Every early Ford steering box I've opened up that had grease in it was worn out.

    YMMV

The steering box needs to be rebuil. There is a bronze bushing that supports the sector shaft, it has become worn and allow the shaft to put lateral pressure on the seal causing it to leak. If you replace just the seal it will resume leaking in short order. Many guys put CV joint grease in them and claim success. I prefer to see them fixed correctly.

            Farm stores should have it.

I use something called Liquid Grease, which is available here in Oz. Don't you have that over there?
It's a bit thick, sort of like the STP oil additive. Easier to pour when warmed up.
However, it's a short term fix. Check play in the sector shaft and replace the bushing, if needed. Then fit a fresh seal.
