  • 2015 Guthrie, OK Car Show Studes

Went to a car show in Guthrie, OK today, only two Studes there.

A VERY WELL DONE, almost original Champ:

And, a respectable, older custom C cab:

No 54 hot rod coupe there?

I like the wheels on the Champ!

Yes, those "artillery-type" wheels and color on that Champ look fantastic.

I agree. That is a really good looking truck.

I would love to know where the owner of the Champ truck got the artillery style wheels. If anyone know anything about these please let me know. I am considering replacing my stock 16" wheels on my '61 Champ truck the next time I buy tires. I need to know where one can buy them to fit a Champ truck. Are 16" wheels available in various widths? What about back clearance?
That style just looks great on the truck above!

Dave, you know it wouldn't break if you didn't drive it. Easy fix.

I am going to guess that your timing was off - set too far early or late giving you compression or detonation when the valves were not fully closed and/or there is slop in the timing chain/sprockets (we are talking about a Chevrolet engine). Knowing you, I discount a lubrication or lack of oil pressure issue.

With the 327 in my 54, I originally assembled it with HD springs to go with the Crower solid lifter cam. Early on, I bent some push rods and even poked a few right through the rocker. The cam and springs allowed 7K shifts, but the rest of the valve train wasn't up to the task. Problem solved with after market rockers, screw in rocker studs, push rod guide plates and after market push rods.
