  • Fuel System: Sending unit gasket

Upon filling my gas tank all the way in my 61 Champ I discovered a bad fuel leak. I found the cork gasket deteriorated. I made a new one out of rubber gasket material and it works better but still have a leak. Is there a source for this gasket in cork material? Or any other solutions?

i have made gaskets out of rubber for a motorcycle but after a while they swell and leak. You acould make one out of cork fairly easily. Cork is available at auto parts stores.

Studebaker vendors have these, part number is 1555964 which replaced several other earlier numbers. These are normally just a few bucks and save the time.

Thanks. I ordered three gaskets from a Stude vendor.

I found this chart regarding chemical compatibility. What I like about it is it is very simple. Either "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down." Even I can understand that!

Study this chart, (even print out a copy), take it with you to your parts store. Look for sheet gasket material compatible with ethanol and make your gasket to suit yourself. I see that you are in Wyoming. You may not have access to alternatives like some of us in more populated areas of the country. In my area, there are industrial distributors with counter sales in addition to many competing Auto parts stores.
