  • Rear Axle: what gear ratio does my 63 champ truck 6cyl 3 speed have?

    I am restoring a 1963 champ truck. I was trying to figure out what gear ratio my truck came with but there is no tag. My truck has a 170 six, 3 speed manual trans and the rearend has a 44 stamped on it. Does anyone know what the ratio the truck came with? I don't want to have to open it and count teeth. Thanks

    Jeff, I'll take a guess and say it's a 4:27.

      Not enough info. With or without overdrive? 8E5 or 8E10?

      Could have 3.73, 4.09, 4.27 or 4.55.

        Thanks. Seems so low. Someone mentioned counting axle revolutions per tire rotation. Any light on how that might work? How many turns for 4:27 etc? Bummer the last owner broke off the tab.

            In a loaded truck, that 170" needs all the mechanical advantage it can get.

            Driveshaft will turn 4 and 1/4 turns for one turn of tire.

                Check the Model Number on the Serial Number Plate on the Rear Door post.

                Also the Axle Ratio and build date is stamped into the edge of the Ring Gear, easily Read with the Cover off.

                UPDATE: OK, saw the E5 Overdrive and I'll say 4.54 to 1 Ratio. With THAT much Truck and THAT tiny 3 Inch Bore Engine, you need all the "Grunt" you can get to move it, with a Load, uphill.

                    According the the Studebaker Truck Specification Book, the 8E5 with overdrive would have had a 4.27 as standard and the 4.55 was optional.

                      =============

                      Small point, if checking by counting the driveshaft revolutions and turning a tire, with the other tire on the ground, differential action will cut the ratio in half. Turn the tire 20 full revolutions, but put 10 into the formula. Tire revolutions / driveshaft revolutions = axle ratio

                        I found it 455. Wow low gearing.

                        Thanks for all the replies
