  • Transmission / Overdrive: '62 Champ V8 3-Speed w/ OD "Insulator-Lever" Stude Part #1551556

Does anyone know a source for these 'grommets'? StudebakerParts.com has the ones that are on the transmission shifter levers (Stude Part #197565), but not for the ones on the shifter linkage at the bottom of the steering column. Our '62 Champ needs a lot of things, but these upper 'grommets' (#1551556) are toast. The shifting linkage needs to be adjusted and we don't know how to do this when these 'grommets' ("Insulators" in Stude speak) need to be replaced. Is there an alternative to these 'grommets' or a way to get around them?

Also, in connection with this, where can one find LOTS of parts for the Borg-Warner T-86 Trans & B-W R-10 OD (which I've been told are on our '62 Champ) should we need to replace any gears, synchronizers, etc.?

Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated! THANKS!

I need the same "insulators" for a '63 Wagonaire and Studebaker International says they have to sell you the complete lever from the column including the insulators. Inquiring minds want to know "where can we buy the insulators separately"?

Out of curiosity did SI give a price for the lever with grommet(s)?

Perhaps a call to Valerie Hanson is in order. If she hasn't been aware of the need maybe she could tool up & make some knowing there is a demand.

If these insulators are the size I think they are, if no one has them, then I'd buy some thick rubber hose, such as vacuum hose or fuel hose, then use a Dremel with a thin cutoff wheel, and spin the rubber on a lathe or drill press. Hold the cutoff wheel against the spinning rubber and cut the groove. When the groove is done, cut the end flat and then cut the other side. This will leave a clean cut rubber grommet with a flange lip on each side. Slide the hose over a wood dowel or steel shaft to hold it firm while doing the grinding.

Welcome to the SDC and to the SDC forum R.L.

On the SDC forum we do not usually email answers, we just post them here unless they are quite personal. So you need to check back here often.

Unless your Truck has been "Custom Built" from a 7E5 6 cylinder or whatever mods COULD have been done, the Transmission SHOULD be a T-89 which will be marked T-85 on the Main Case, but contain Lower 1st. and 2nd. Gears than it's Car counterpart T-85.

In addition, it will have the H.D. Overdrive R-11. Parts for these are a lot harder to find than the more common Standard Duty T-86 Borg Warner for Cars, but some ARE out there at Transmission Specialty Stores. Most Studebaker vendors are already "cleaned out".
