In trying to replace the oil seal in the differential connected to the rear drive shaft, I finally removed the bolt holding the flange in place but cannot remove the dust cover. Have soaked in penetrant for a couple of days & still no movement. Any ideas on how to remove this part so I can replace the oil seal?

I'm not sure what year and model you are working on, but all the pinion seals I've replaced had the dust shield fastened to the yoke, so when I tapped the yoke off the shield went with it. Then I could stab a screwdriver into the seal and pry it out.

BTW, when I worked at the Chevy dealership I had to replace a pinion seal one day because the guy ran over a plastic bread wrapper. It got wrapped around the rear yoke and took the seal out. In the country a lot of seals get taken out by tall grass and barbed wire. One day a guy can in and asked what in the world would make his pickup truck shake so bad. He had barbed wire wrapped around the driveshaft that was bigger than a large beehive.

1949 Studebaker Champ. No, unfortunately the dust shield isn't fastened to the yoke on this one.

      BTW - great story!

        The "rear" driveshaft ?
That nut is supposed to be "tight" from the factory. Might take some work to get it off.

        Sorry...

Thanks, Mike. Got the nut off finally and removed the flange but can't budge the dust cover.
