    Hi

Can someone please help me decode this vin number...... 7192186

Series and body style : 4T

    President 1957

  • #2
Nothing can be "decoded" from the serial number other than the fact that it is a 1957 President assembled in the South Bend plant. The model designation is 57H. Check the small plate on the inside of the firewall. This body plate will tell you a little more. Best to just contact the Studebaker National Museum and get the production order on the car. Modern vehicle identification numbers (or VIN) came into existence after Studebaker ceased the production of automobiles. As Mr. Quinn points out, you have a sequential serial number on your door post and nothing more. While today's VINs can provide details on what a vehicle is and how it is equipped, your serial number does not. On the larger later model truck data plates there is info on GVR, axles and brakes.

The "Series" 57H is President, the "Body Style" could be: F= 2 Door Sedan, W = short wheelbase (116") 4 Door Sedan, Y= President Classic Long Wheelbase (120") 4 Door Sedan, P= Broadmoor 4 door Station Wagon or a C= Silver Hawk sport coupe (not really called a President but it IS, due to the President "P" Code Engine).

        All with a Studebaker 289 V8 Engine.

As Post #2 mentions, the Body Tag showing this info in on the passenger side of the Firewall, engine side.
Following the 57H will be the Body "Type" Letter, followed by the Trim Level Code and under that, will be the sequential number of this Body among the other '57's of that Body Type, only on the BODY LINE, NOT the Final Assembly Line of the Car.

All of the Details of the Car are found on the Production Order from the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend, IN.

          Taya,
Post the script from the body tag on your firewall. That will reveal almost as much as purchasing a production order.
