  • Brakes: Needed brake adjusters for a 52 commander

Would anyone have or know of where I can get adjusters for a 52 Land Cruiser brakes. The nuts are frozen and I can't get the adjustment to stay put. They are hard to turn and I thought it would be tight enough but I guess not. Both SI and StudebakerParts.com dont list them in the online catalogs.

Art, do you mean the eccentrics on the backing plate to do the gross adjustments?

Yes, the nuts that you loosen up to make the adjustment are all frozen. I tore up one trying to get it freed up don't want to do that again without having backups.

If you have a Studebaker , you should have the parts books.Look up the part numbers you need.
Most vendors stock their parts by part numbers.
This avoids misunderstanding such as "I meant this other doohickey"

As near as I can tell from my parts catalog, the eccentrics are part of the backing plate. They are not listed separately. Left front plate is 531929 and right front is 531928.

SI list a self adjuster kit for 48-53 cars n trucks, part number 801278 at $84. Or Individual parts (doo - hickeys) are also listed, from $3 to $17.
Put "brake adjuster" in the search window..................

                    These are for the Champions.
The Commander is like the truck and has the flat eccentric adjusters.

Quentin, the self adjusters that mount to and extend through the shoes are a constant means of finite adjustment. I'm under the impression Art is looking for the gross adjustments obtained by the two eccentrics on each backing plate. if I am wrong I hope he chimes in. This is where that factory catalog becomes worth its weight.

Thanks - however, The SI ad I mentioned (input number 801278) does specify "Truck" as per below -
"16 Pc for Front or Rear 1949-53 1/2 Ton PU (Takes 2 Kits Per Car) 1948-1953 Self Adjuster Kit"
"16 Pc for Front or Rear, 1949-53 1/2 Ton PU (Takes 2 Kits Per Car)."
Interestingly, putting "self adjuster brake parts" in the item description window results in a different ad with a list of the individual components, again for 48-53 car all models and half ton pick ups. Have a look, as I am clueless as to whether this is correct or not, or whether the parts you seek are listed. Good hunting.

If you are talking about the adjusters on the backing plates with the eccentrics you need new backing plates with the non removable adjusters.
The self adjusters on the brake shoes are a different thing and that is what SI is selling.
If you do not have a parts manual SI has reprints.
