Wow, never heard such a story!
Guess these "stories" are only limited by the imaginations of those who are fabricating them.

Where do you think AMC (and International Harvester) got their 304 CID engines?

A buddy's mom had one in a station wagon 40 plus years ago. The exhaust "manifold" was a piece of pipe with holes pierced in it, clamped against the block.

But he got it wrong by continuing the myth that Studebaker went out of business. It merely divested itself of its money losing automotive division in 1966. Studebaker later merged with Wagner Electric and then Worthington to become the New York based Studebaker-Worthington company. Studebaker-Worthington was acquired in 1979 by McGraw Edison and the name then disappeared.

Studebaker holdings at the time it divested itself of the auto division included STP fuel additives, Gravely lawn mowers, Clarke industrial floor cleaners, and more which were acquired over the previous several years.

While we can be sentimental about the discontinuation of auto production by Studebaker in 1966 its ultimate obligation was to its shareholders.
