  • Ignition: hot coil

Just installed rebuilt 289 in 1957 golden hawk. I noticed the coil is getting extremely hot during the start up process. Too hot to touch. Coil only gets hot during the cranking process. Coil is new 12v and ballast resistor is new and is wired per color coded wiring diagram. Any ideas?

Most 12 volt cars have a bypass to the resistor while cranking the engine. So, you are sending 12 volts into a 6 volt coil, but you shouldn't have to crank for more than a second or two, and this isn't enough time to overheat the coil. I would measure the voltage at the coil primary while cranking and while running. Take the reading at the power feed terminal, not the points terminal.
