That was just a mis-directed post that I believe was meant for fake New Replacement Serial Number Plates, not "freshen-up" Decals.

It wasn't mis-directed at all. :-) Ken, I believe you have already spoken to my partner in crime, Chris from Studebaker of Australia, about the decals. It's all good.

Yes its all good, your decal has been sent, and the replacement serial number plates that Studerich disparagingly refers to are also still available and proving quite popular.

According to you... Therefore it 'ain't necessarily so. Do you have any empirical proof that it is an offence, criminal or otherwise?

Well, I suppose we could contact the Massachusetts Registry Of Motor Vehicles and ask those folks how they feel about it.....You're asking if legal authorities approve of someone manufacturing 'repo' Studebaker SERIAL NUMBER PLATES, (the stainless steel plate itself with a vehicle number on it), in their backyard....Correct?

If if goes on the same car with the same serial number which is verified by title, then I personally don't see the fuss!

I suppose 'you' could contact you state regulatory authority if it is bothering you that much, and get their opinion. But it seems you and Stude Rich are the main opposition to these tags, which is fine, your prerogative. It seems with all this hoo-ha the initial objective of the 'reproduction' serial number plates has been lost in the rhetoric. We had these manufactured, (not in a back yard I hasten to add), to help fellow Studebaker owners replace damaged or missing plates with like. As Bezhawk said if it's that same serial number, what is the fuss? We went to considerable effort to make sure our plates were as near as possible to the original. I do acknowledge there could be some unscrupulous Studebaker owners out there who could request a plate with a different number than what was on the original car, but how many body tags, engines etc, etc have been transferred over to another body to save a car? We will continue to help out our fellow Stude owners despite your condemnation - in a way, your continued arguments to these plates have raised their profile on the forum resulting in quite a few being supplied to happy Stude owners. For this we thank you. This will be my last post on the matter. However, while we are talking of hard to get parts; the parts hoard SoA purchased just before Christmas here in Aust has some very sought after parts that had been languishing for years in the dark. If anyone reading this is having trouble sourcing these type of parts please don't hesitate in contacting Studebaker of Australia. With our $ down against the Greenback at the moment it makes these parts quite affordable.

It is common in the vintage vehicle hobby to have reproduced VIN plates. Studebaker enthusiasts are actually late to the game and if it wasn't for Chris, we would still not have them. Thanks Chris! They are used in high point restorations where the tags are damaged and in instances where the tags are just plain missing. Here are just a sample of other makes currently on the market and openly advertised...

If you truly believe it is immoral to be selling repo vin tags, you've made your case here, NOW you need to be on many many more vintage car forums making new friends. ;)

Dick - Certainly agree. Not sure anyone thinks it's immoral, but (as you know) there have been cases of prosecutions of people who were trying to sell counterfeits of (relatively) rare and more valuable muscle cars (eg, Malibu SS454 made from ordinary Chevelles). Both the Fisher Body and serial plates had to be replaced to do that, so there is concern about the legality of reproduction serial plates. And replacing the VIN plate on a more modern car is illegal because the model year determines the emission standard that the vehicle must meet. All that said, these concerns would not appear to apply to Studebakers, especially if the reproduction plate is just being used to replace a damaged plate.

Totally agree, Skip. There are dishonest people out there. Hopefully they are caught and punished and that the press that results from these high profile examples discourages others from attempting the same.

SN-60...if you mean me, I am all for Chris reproducing Studebaker VIN plates. I don't feel it is right to penalize all the hobiests who want or need a new plate because of the .001% who might take the huge risk of counterfeiting a car. Besides, I can only think of about 3 Studebakers where this might even be a temptation for an evil doing risk taker. ;)
