A South Bend Bridge? Well, that's how I envision the passing and today's funeral of Rev. Theodore Hesburgh, President of South Bend's Notre Dame University from 1952-1987.
With his departure, another soul has passed whose tenure at a South Bend institution began when Studebaker was going great guns and ended long after Studebaker was long gone. In other words, Father Hesburgh's tenure bridged South Bend with Studebaker to South Bend without Studebaker. Most people there today, especially those in influential positions, only know South Bend without Studebaker.
(IIRC, it was reported that South Bend's current Mayor, while respectful of Studebaker and doing his part to help preserve the legacy, was born after Studebaker ceased production!)
Time marches on.... BP
