  • Tri-Point Emblems

Tri-Point emblems were apparently used on early '53 cars but not late '53 due some apparent inside pressure from MB. Were those same Tri-Point emblems utilized on '52 and '51 models, and if so was it only the V8 equipped models? Thanks, Dan

No tri-stars anywhere on '51 or '52 that I've ever seen, Dan, and I've resurrected all three years.
My own '53 is an early model assembled April 30, 1953. In addition to the tri-stars on the hood and trunk and wheel covers, the tri-stars appear on the "Commander" script on the trunk, the rear seat ashtray cover, the radio delete plate and the horn button. Each of these disappeared as the factory used up their stock so, later models still sport many of these.

There was a very nice one on ebay that just expired with no bids. I almost bid, just because it was so cheap, but I'll probably never be lucky enough to own a 53.

I think the reverse light lenses were Tri-star on some earlier cars, and Also the Commander script was available on the trunk lids of 52's IIRC. But, It's been a long time since I've seen one, and the snow may have froze my brain today!

You are right, Brad. I did forget the back-up lights.

Yes, I've seen more than one '54 (!) model with the tri star back up lens (original 1954 cars)

Probably the most obvious were the early '53 Wheelcovers with the Tri-Star.

Your statement is only correct for South Bend assembled cars. At the Vernon (LA) California assembly plant, all 1953 models had the tri-star emblems.

OH! Hey Dan, I just noticed no one answered your question about 6 or 8's. The TriStar was used on both, the Six had a Y/S and the V8 had a Y/8. Just as the V/S and V/8 that replaced it.

                        Looks like a V8 emblem not a tri-star.

Hamilton assembled cars had the tri-star emblems as well but I don't know for how long. Gary, you'll remember my Hamilton-built Maui Blue Starlight Coupe that had these emblems.

Would '52 horn button be considered as having that emblem? Or too short on the bottom side?

No, Stu. Brad is referring to the "Commander" script to the right of the license plate. It actually has two tri-stars included, and was available in '52, '53 and '54. Part # 299589W
