  • Engine: 4 bbl VS 2 bbl Horse Power Rating for 259 V8

I recently replaced the Carter 2 bbl on the 259 V8 in my 1961 Champ Truck with a 4 bbl WCFB.
From what I have read the engine with the 2 bbl was rated at 180 HP. Does anyone know the HP bump with the 4 bbl?
It delivers power through the standard 3-speed with OD.

    IIRC it was 195hp.

That 2 Brl. rating is the Car rating, the 4 Brl. Car rating is 195, but if it still has the not re-surfaced 7.0 or 7.5 with thin Gaskets, Truck Heads, it will be less, maybe by 5-10.

The engine is a rebuild done several years ago and I do not have any of the rebuild specs. I'll do some more digging to see what I can learn. I know the guy who rebuilt the engine was named Campbell and his shop is in Boring, Oregon (yes, that is Boring). Someone in the Northwest Chapter may have a contact number for him if he is still around.

Give us the Casting numbers from the center exhaust ports of your Heads and we can be "close".

The casting number will indicate what left the factory. Running a compression test is the most reliable determinant of what you have at present. That will indicate the dynamic compression, taking into account if the heads were milled and which head gasket was used, the ring seal and the camshaft.

Doesn't the 195hp rating also take into account dual exhausts?

I am not in a position to run a compression test at the moment so I tried to read the numbers on the center exhaust ports of my heads.
They are not easy to read but they appear to be 535915 or 535976. Could not get a clear idea of the last two digits.

So it's probably generating about 190 HP, is what I gather.
