How many Studebaker diesel trucks were built? I'm getting a 62, 4-53 bobtail

  • #2
How many fingers and toes do you have? 7E Diesel's could not have been produced in very large quantity, that is for sure.

It always intrigues me how owners always want to know how many of their Model were built, it seems to me anyway, as very insignificant what the number is, as all Studebakers were built in such lower numbers than most of the competition to make them ALL somewhat rare.

Sometimes this question is directed toward VALUE, but the truth is, Condition and Desirability are the only things that actually drive that.

Congrats, you have a rare one, take good care of her or Him as the case probably is!

I believe the October 1991 TW had an article by Fred Fox on the diesel trucks, and included the exact number of each model built. I don't have access to my copy at the moment, but maybe someone else does.

I believe 705 is the total number produced, I have owned 2 7E 45's and now have a 8E 15 and a 8E 35 Frank Drumheller keeps the register for Diesel Trucks.

With regards to 7E-45 production, the Oct. 91 TW says 349 produced. It also mentions that 40 7E-45 that were unsold were given new serial numbers and were called 1964 8E models. Overall production of Diesel models totalled 702 with 117 exported out of the US.

                  Hope this helps.

I have the October 1991 TW in front of me and I quote:
                    1962 E15-0; E25-0; E35-30; E45-349; Total = 379
                    1963 E15-51; E25-15; E35-22; E45-151; Total = 239
                    1964 E15-14; E25-1; E35-9; E45-60; Total = 84
Grand Total all Diesels, all years = 702

Dang I was off by 3 trucks. I guess that just makes the Diesels that much rarer. Jim it looks like from your picture that your new truck has a lot of options on it.
Vertical exhaust, step tanks, door visors, fender flares, 96"BBC. Does it still have the engine? Have fun.

Did Studebaker make their own diesel engine, or was it from another company?

*** Please see correction in post #19 ***

Looks like Chuck Naugle leading the Diesel Roundup!

And rumor has it, the truck is a '61 with an "EX" serial number.
Where does that fit into the official count?
