  • Engine: Painting

I am in the process of preserving my 1928 FAE Cabriolet Studebaker . I plan to make it as safe and mechanically sound as I can.

    The questions I have.
    1. I need to have the engine looked at. It runs, has one cylinder that is weak, at some point in the past the head was welded and is leaking some anti freeze
but, the crack isn't by the weak cylinder. Any recommendations on a good shop in the Cincinnati area.

    2. Who could re-arch my leaf springs. They appear flat.

    3. Is it recommended to degrease and repaint the engine, frame, chassis, brake drums and so on without dismantling the car
or will this prove to be a lot of work and hurt the vale of the car.

    Thanks

Free advice is worth what you pay for it but here are my answers. If you have not found it yet the Antique Studebaker Club forums have a lot more pre-war information:

    1. Don't know. But someone on the forums will.
    2. Any spring shop can help you with this.
    3. It is your car so set it up the way you want. Lucky for us very few Studebakers are worth more than the cost of restoration so nothing that you do that does not involve cutting and welding is likely to hurt the value much. Now survivor-class judging is another matter if you have that in mind. Personally on my car if it comes off it gets cleaned and painted before I put it back on.

Now we need pictures! Good luck!

Thanks this hard to decide which and what way to go. The car was in my family for the last 55 years and I would ride in the rumble seat when I was three in the local parades. Here are some pic's.Click image for larger version

Looks really nice. At first I did not see the lift and wondered why you thought the springs were flat You might really want to think about how you want to use the car. It can run on Sunday drives and parades for a really long time with a weak cylinder and a small antifreeze leak. Enjoy the car!
