  • Cool/Heat: How do I Change the Heater Core on a 1963 Lark Cruiser?

I don't want to take apart more than I have to. Thank you in advance Anne

After removing the air distribution duct and Defroster Hoses (screw in firewall), just drop the Heater core enclosure box under the dash after removing the attachments: Hoses and Cables. Then you can pull the Core from the firewall.

Get an old plastic dishpan or similar to catch the coolant that does not drain from the hoses first and pull the Carpet back.

I think it will kind of explain itself, once you get into it.
Good luck with it, wait to take your morning shower until AFTER doing this!

Removing the glove box may make it easier. The whole fan/heater/core assembly should drop out.

Why do you need to remove it? If you are experiencing a leak, check the water control valve, which is held on to the back of the dash by two bolts. If you do have to remove the core, it will drop out - just one of those jobs where you have to lay on the passenger floor.

Anne, not nearly as easy as the '59-'60 Larks but, be thankful it's not an S-10 with A/C.

I just changed one in a '63 Cruiser a couple of weeks ago. The "Vanity" (mentioned as "glove box" above) is not in the way at all. I would recommend having a #1339224 Climatizer Housing Seal on hand before you re- assemble it, though.

Quite probably correct, Jerry. The dash in my '63 had been replaced with a '66 dash and the glove box was in the way of the core replacement. I so very much liked, even looked forward to, replacing the heater core in the early Larks.

Anne, for what it's worth, I documented my heater rebuild on my blog a couple years ago. Here are the links; maybe they'll help.

#2: Rebuild Blower & Diverter Box
                  #3: Reinstallation

                  Good luck!
