I have those period correct exhaust deflectors on my Sky Hawk, and it seems like one always has a carbon deposit on it while the other doesn't. Thoughts?

Before going further, I'd check my heat riser, if stuck could be causing all (most) exhaust to go out the right side.

Yep! Do check the heat riser. I just freed up the heat riser on my 57 Packard.

The heat riser is located on the right hand (passengers) side exhaust manifold. If the counter weight is up then it's stuck closed. It needs to either be free to turn or keep it stuck open so the counterweight is down.

What warren said, and when closed it goes out the LEFT side.

I think a cable operated heat riser would be a good thing.

Is this something I can do myself? My mechanic is VERY expensive.
