    Are both front and rear outboard (toward the exh manifold) oil holes functional on a v8.
    I'm working on a early 289 that both the front holes are stopped up. Looks like the oil returns thru the hollow dowel pin in the block.

    Yes, that the hollow dowel pin in the rear is a drain, but the one in
    the front of the engine, I believe, is not a through hole.
