View Full Version : Turning Wheels November Issue - Delivery Survey

Stu Chapman
10-20-2014, 12:13 PM
Hi everyone. The November issue of Turning Wheels is being mailed today, October 20th 2014, which should mean that some of you can may receive delivery by the end of the week. Please let us know when you receive your copy, again by indicating your state or province and zip or postal code. We will keep this survey open until November 20th. If you haven't received your copy by then, contact Cornerstone for a replacement, but please not before.

Ever since we began providing this survey method of keeping track, we've had excellent cooperation from Steve Musser, our printer at Sheridan, as well as improved distribution. And I believe delivery has improved in most cases. We still look forward to the day we can get every issue mailed by the 15th of the month preceding issue date. What we cannot control are the actions of the USPS and Canada Post. Since many of you still are experiencing problems locally, we're taking the opportunity to give you an overview of our mailing program.

Domestic U.S. mailing is sorted by zip code and bundled according to USPS specifications. Turning Wheels is then bagged and delivered to the Bulk Mail Entry Unit (BMEU) in Hanover PA for distribution by USPS. BMEU then forwards the pre-sorted mailings to their respective mailing centers for distribution to the mail carriers for home delivery or bulk box delivery. This is where breakdowns usually occur. The local postal station can take up to 48 hours before processing prior to sorting plus an extra day for sorting, which can mean there could be 3 days or more before the magazines actually move, then there's another day for delivery. If each unit in the process takes this much time there could easily be 10 days from mailing to your receipt. Where there are postal stations in the rural delivery areas, there can possibly another week or so required.

Canadian mailing is handled pretty much in the same manner as U.S. mailing, except that it enters the country at one of three border points and is then handled by the Canada Post system. This can often add an extra week to the average U.S. time of 10 days. However, nothing here is carved in stone. For example some Canadians received their October Turning Wheels within 10 days of leaving the printer, well ahead of many U.S. deliveries.

Foreign deliveries are handled by a distribution company named IMEX which operates out of Jamaica NY and these deliveries go to IMEX the same day they go to USPS. SDC has used at least three such companies in the past two years in an effort to improve timing. IMEX has so far proven their worth to SDC. They route our mail in the way that best translates into efficiency and reliability. But again, after Turning Wheels begins its trek into several foreign lands, we're at the mercy of local postal jurisdictions.

Some of you have compared delivery of Turning Wheels to that of your AOAI and Antique Studebaker Club mailings. Please be assured these magazines are also printed at Sheridan, and they enter the postal systems in exactly the same way as does Turning Wheels.

Hopefully the delivery method described will help you better understand the process. But please do not hesitate to have a conversation with your local postmaster where it is obvious there are specific problems. Ideally, in a perfect world, all U.S. addresses should receive November Turning Wheels by October 30th.

I'll be closing the October survey this Wednesday, October 22nd. If you haven't yet responded, please do so right away.

Good one Stu. I'd like to think I have them running scared, but.... oh well. I couldn't believe it this morning when my co-worker who's route I live on told me it was here. I had not even had time to tell her they were mailed yesterday and I'd be counting the days till she rolled it properly (not bending the spine) and placed it in my mailbox.:!:

Have you complained to your local post office? I have. Have you gone online or called the USPS customer service line & complained? I have. Still haven't gotten OCT.14 T.W. went to the local P.O> yesterday and while they were very pleasant all I got was an 800 number to call. I've tried calling at least a dozen times and can't get thru. They give me a chance to tell them what I want and then tell me they can't understand me and that they have "an unusual amount of calls and that it will take longer than normal " to talk to someone. This is at all hours from 7AM thru 3:30PM! I've got a lot better things to do than be put on hold for hours on end. This is the only of several car clubs I've had a problem like this with and it's just not worth it! When renewal time comes, I'll respond to it just as promptly as I've been getting T.W for the last 5 or 6 months. Again this is zip 92336

Please remember, this is not the fault of SDC and/or its printer or distributor. Is has been ascertained there is a specific problem in certain areas of California. If USPS won't talk to you, have you consider your Congressman or Senator? Sometimes going over heads works.

I believe that they are delivered to your carrier with the other "flats". It is after this that it usually gets folded. A mailbox at least one size larger than standard size is a big help. If this doesn't do it, speak to your carrier and then his/her superior.

I agree! One week from PA to NE is terrible for First Class.
It used to pay to receive TW via First Class. Now, it seems that people all over the country receive their TWs via Second Class before some First Class deliveries are made.

Friends...ZIP CODES TOO PLEASE!!!! I am having a battle with the local postal authorities & am using the info here as ammo. I have less to fight with when there are no zip codes given, especially California addresses. I am still waiting for the October issue either the replacement from Cornerstone of the one "lost" in the post office, let alone the November issue too. I'll take my copy folded in half or however it arrives as long as it gets here. It will be pressed nice & flat in my bookcase anyway.

Thanks for this reminder Warren. I've asked many times for responses to include zip/postal codes, however some members do forget to include them. They really are helpful.

Also, I've suggested that when members are renewing their memberships they include the full 9 digit zip codes when they have them. I'm told this does speed up delivery. Does anyone know this for certain?

Well, we've had a number of first class deliveries coming much later than 2nd class deliveries. But here's a case with the use of the full 9 digit zip code not doing anything for the recipient, taking a full 8 days longer than another recipient in Indiana who uses the 5 digit zip. Makes us wonder if the USPS is fibbing a little bit about the efficiencies of the 9 digit code.

The last four digits on the Zip Code only help with delivery after the item reaches its final Post Office.
Most of the problems seem to be with the area distribution stations. They only need to know which Post Office to send it to (first five digits of the Zip Code).
I do not and have never worked for the Post Office, but this is how I understand it. If I am incorrect, someone with more knowledge/experience with this can correct me.

The South Bend Sorting Station is set for closure soon, and I think they are already sending much of the "work" to Fort Wayne, Gary and Kokomo. Periodicals have the lowest priority. I'm certain there will be pains over the next few months as workload shifts.

We send many packages Priority Mail to our daughters in Muncie, IN and Texas. First stop in scanning used to always be South Bend after the initial drop-off. Last few weeks, it shows Indianapolis as the sorting station scan. I think my situation is definitely being affected by the South Bend Station Closing, and is hopefully temporary.

Here is a listing I found of all the "PD&C" centers set to close nationwide. Can't argue with the logic, because my former employer used the same type numbers to justify our South Bend Branch closing in March 2011. South Bend 'PD&C" will close early 2015, and be merged to Fort Wayne. Lots of other closures approved but not implemented yet nationwide:

Also, I've suggested that when members are renewing their memberships they include the full 9 digit zip codes when they have them. I'm told this does speed up delivery. Does anyone know this for certain?

Stu Chapman
If it does it's not working in my area Stu. I've had the 9 digit zip code on my mailings for the past few years now but the service from USPS seems to get worse by the day. I received my October issue from cornerstone yesterday. It was mailed 1st class on 10/22 (with a 9 digit zip code) where they paid $2.45 postage taking 9 days to arrive from Minnesota, shameful service for that price if you ask me! Needless to say I haven't heard from the local post office yet on my complaint & November hasn't arrived yet either (or neither has the "lost" October issue).

Lots of other closures approved but not implemented yet nationwide:

http://about.usps.com/streamlining-operations/area-mail-processing.htm

Our sorting station was in Newburgh, NY, about 20 miles away, until a few years ago when it was closed and our sorting is now done in Albany, NY, about 85 miles away. This change added about two to three days to First Class delivery and about five to seven days to Second Class delivery.

Sounds like your mailbox is too small. I would suggest you replace it with something big enough so they don't have to struggle to get your magazines in. Just a thought.

I don't think my mail lady picks up Friday's mail. I have checked over the past three months and I receive nothing on Friday except "junk mail" to no specific addressee. I suspect others are in the same boat.

That's disgraceful USPS service. Contact Cornerstone for a replacement October issue but also start a complaint process with your local postmaster. California has too much of this problem.

Well, I'll be! looked in the mailbox today and there were my Oct. 14 and Nov. 14 TWs! Lets see that's about 2 months for one issue and 3 weeks for the other, guess they're getting better! Zip is 92336 and yes, they have my 9 digit zip on them. Get my ASC review on time and it only has the 5 digit zip code!
