  • Engine: metal noise

While driving my 54 pick-up today I noticed a noise that sounded like a bad valve or piston. It only happened when I slow down. When I started to pick up a little bit it would go away. I have a 259 v8 that has about 20k miles on it any thoughts?

If it's ONLY on deceleration, could it be a bad motor mount that allows the engine to move (torque) enough that the fan blade or other moving parts in the drive line may be hitting something? I'd think if it were a bad valve or piston, the noise would be more noticeable under load or acceleration. Perhaps an exhaust manifold leak that "pops" when you let off the gas? What kind of sound are you hearing?

To me it sounded something like metal, my wife says a thud or tap.

A couple of dumb questions.... automatic, or manual? Does it do it in gear, or in neutral also? Exhaust pipe rattle, maybe?
