  • Drive Shaft: 1954 Commander front drive shaft adjustment(?)

References are to pages 1,2,3 and 4 of the "propeller shafts and universal joints" pages of the 1953 Passenger Car Shop Manual. Can the front shaft be adjusted forward about 1/8 inch towards the transmission? The problem is; the u joint align with the transmission flange but they are about 1/8 inch short of seating into the transmission flange. They will seat only if forced down by tightening the U bolts, which does not sound right. The motor and transmission are back as far a they will go. Page two shows an exploded view of the connection and support where the front shaft and rear shaft meet; is there any adjustment at this point that would move the front drive shaft forward 1/8 inch? It's in the correct support stud mounting holes for 120-1/2 wheelbase. It does have worn insulators which are being replaced. Ken, Deltaville, Va

I've seen this problem before. That Stude had a center bearing support crossmember that was damaged and pushed back a bit.

Interesting, thanks, any idea as to what to do about it? Ken

How about unbolting the yoke from the trans, sliding it off the output shaft and inserting a steel washer to make up the difference?
