  • Gasket question

In putting the OHV six back together ('63) I'm missing the oil filter housing gasket that goes to the block. I suppose I could order one but would rather make one, and thinking very thin material would do the trick. Ya think?
As always, many thanks for the help.

that's funny , I wonder why they don't put that gasket in with the others. I am putting my 289 together and that gasket is missing from mine as well, go figure!

Tom, use thin GASKET paper. Don't try using substitutes; that's a critical gasket, for sure.

Be sure you have ALL the necessary holes for the oil passages cut; wouldn't want to wipe the bearings on that new rebuild.

I keep a pliers-style paper punch in the shop for trimming holes in thin gaskets. Bandage scissors are also useful.

Actually the oil filter adapter to eng. block gasket is a THICK neoprene cord re-inforced type of gasket! [:0]

It is the same one on the 6 & 8 Cyl.

Thanks, Rich. The vendor tells me .028 to .030" and a 30-year jobber at my FLAPS handed me a 'card' of gasket material with a crack & peel backing, specifically for oil applications. Sure could have used an Exacto for all the twists and turns in cutting it out!
