I need to put a new cover gasket on my axle on my 63 Daytona convertible,289 engine and automatic.
The tag on it says,43-13 3.31.
So is this the #23/#27 differential or the #44 ?
Thanks,
john

Look on the Web between the Axle Tube and the "Pumpkin" on the Right side lower for the raised 27 or 44. If this is a Factory 289 Car with a never messed with rear axle it SHOULD be a 44, but be sure to check.

This should show you were to look for the 44 or 27. In 63 23's were not used in Studebaker passenger cars although it is not impossible to find one under any later Studebaker, if it would fit the model and a previous owner was inclined that way.

By dividing the 43 by 13 you will come to 3.307692307692308 which makes it a 3.31 as noted on the tag. That's all you can get from that tag unless it was a ratio that was only available in a given year but as many will attest if you really wanted it Studebaker were very accommodating, which means just because the shop manual does not list it does not mean it was not available.

A 3.31:1 ratio would be the default differential for a 1963 Daytona convertible with V8 and AT. The offered options would be 3.07:1 and 3.73:1 (barring special orders). You "likely" have the differential original to the car.

These look like Very good Gaskets for $22.00 but I have never had a Felpro Gasket leak.
If you want to find one they seem to only be available here:

I found it ! Thanks everyone ,especially Skybolt with the diagram. It's a 44 or a Dolly Parton if you are using craps table jargon.
