  • I-495 bridge closed at Wilmington, DE

They anticipate this could take many weeks so, if you're headed south to Dover, plan accordingly.

"We're on Day Two of what's going to be a pretty significant traffic event for the Northeast region," Transportation Secretary Shailen Bhatt told reporters Tuesday. "This is a very serious situation that we're glad we caught in time."

There goes part of my alternate route of going through eastern Pennsylvania to avoid all of New Jersey.

      Gary,

Have you considered the Tappan Zee Bridge to the Garden State Parkway South, to exit 98 to 195 West to 295 South?.....Avoids the NJ Turnpike and it's construction.

I came north on the NJ Turnpike a couple of weeks ago. It was pretty good. Is there new construction?

Probably not, Gary. I believe that bridge is where I-495 crosses the Christina River closest to the Delaware. If you are coming down I-95 just stay on it and, while there may be increased traffic from normal, should get you there. I suspect I will be coming down 202 to I-95, unless I run shorter two-lanes from Lancaster on 896 to Newark, DE. What was your planned route? You may not need to change it. Just dea with increased traffic.

If you go the Jersey Turnpike you will bypass the bridge.

Remember, Pennsylvania lets you come and go. You have to pay to get out of New Jersey!

Hey, just trying to help! You are right about staying on 95 to avoid the bridge at 495.

By map and memory, not navigation/Mapquest,etc. - Wappinger - Kent, Myers, 9D, I-84 (to PA) [there is also major construction on the I-84 bridge from NY to PA], 209, 476 (E-PA Tpk.), I-95, 1 or 13 - Dover. Hey, it looks like going this way I avoid 495 and will just have extra traffic on 95. What is the best way/route from I-95 to Dover (1 or 13)?

                    Gary;
I would think twice about using 209 through PA to Stoudsburg. The speed limit is low, passing is limited and tourists are all over the place. A very frustrating drive. You could always go through NJ and take the Cape May Ferry and make it a new experience. My son has a house in Norfolk and I take I87 to 17 in NJ to the Garden State and then the NJ turnpike to the Delaware Memorial bridge. Then it is De. ! to Dover. After that it is 113 and 13 to the Chesapeake Bay bridge and Norfolk. About 4 or 5 hours to Dover from Saugerties depending upon traffic.

I know that 209 can be congested, but it is only about 35 miles.
I am mostly trying to avoid all of NJ.
I guess that you all heard of the comic (Tracy Morgan) that was coming home from the Dover hotel today and his limo-bus (M-B) was rearended by a tractor-trailer (WalMart) on the NJ Turnpike. One was killed and others were seriously injured (including Morgan in critical condition).

I just made the trip yesterday June 6th from exit 8 on the NJ turnpike to the Dover Downs casino. You do not need to go on 495 for this route and I went during morning rush hour traffic. There were no delays. Once you cross the Delaware Memorial Bridge you are going to take Rt 1 or 13 or even both. I returned home last night using the same exact route between 6 pm and 8:30 pm and again, not one delay from traffic. The NJ turnpike is still going through construction for its widening project, speeds the whole way down and back were 75 - 80 mph, except in Delaware where there are a few 50 mph hour speed zones.

I will offer this: 295 South is wooded and more like a Parkway and pretty much parallels the NJ Turnpike south of the Trenton area. I still like:

Garden State Parkway South, to exit 98 to 195 West to 295 South to Delaware Memorial Bridge.

Hey Todd (Jet Green Daytona) was all that just for a dry run or was some racing and gambling involved?

Just for the experience? Sure. Still a longer, and more expensive trip! On the Ferry for an hour twenty five minutes for $44! Then you still need to drive north to Dover!

I doubt anyone should have much problem around Wilmington unless they make a wrong turn.

I'm headed to Cape May for the week following the meet so, just for the fun of it, I'm taking the ferry.

Hey JG that was just a dry run and a good excuse to try out the new tires on the Daytona. Mark Henning and I tried out the route to take for the Monday tour to the Auburn Heights Steam Museum on Monday of the show. For anyone that is going its a nice somewhat rural route from the host hotel to the museum, I will be the lead car for the tour. The only gamble was doing 75-80 on the turnpike, I know for a fact right before exit 2, heading south the state troopers have a good hiding spot for a speed trap, lesson learned.
