Greetings-
On a 1952 Commander Land Cruiser the Shop Manual refers to adjustment of the 3-speed manual gearshift linkage using a Studebaker special adjustment tool, J-4690, "Transmission Shift Rod Adjusting Gage" (Kent-Moore brand).
This tool is supposed to be inserted into the threaded grease zerk mounting hole located in the control box (between the two lower column mounted shift levers) in order to achieve the correct alignment "by engaging the flats of the shift levers".
Not having the J-4690 tool handy, how does one go about properly adjusting the linkage sans this tool?
Is there a "substitute" tool which will mimic the original's function?
Does anyone have the J-4690 to loan &/or copy?
The car has new mounts (front & rear), new shift lever bushings, etc and all else appears to be in order, but I suspect the column mounted linkage is out of alignment (under the hood, just above the steering box).
When driving the car, there is no issue with shifting into either reverse or first gear.
The real problem is an inability to shift into either second or third gear; a great deal of resistance or binding up of the shift lever occurs and sometimes it is a real bear to get the car out of first gear back into neutral.
Can anyone give experienced feedback regarding how to follow the shop manual adjustment procedure without having the original tool at hand?
Thanks.
